How to Contribute to the HNSA Operators Handbookby Norman CaryIn order for the HNSA Operators Handbook to be a useful web publication, covering the full range of subjects with which ship managers and staff have to deal, there must be input from the subject matter experts. No one person has all the necessary knowledge to put this compendium together. All of us in the broader historic ship community must contribute our expertise. I'm Norman Cary, the editor of this publication, and in this section I'm going to spell out how you can help. If you want to contribute an essay or two, or several to the Operators Handbook, please contact me at normtuba@aol.com or through the HNSA office at execdir@hnsa.org providing the subject of the essay to me, a general description of what you want to put in it, and some basic information on yourself and your credentials for writing the essay. From that, I can determine if the proposed essay meets our needs, if we already have an essay in place or in progress that covers that topic, or if your approach to an already covered subject is sufficiently different that publication of your essay is justified. Once I have determined that we want your essay, I will let you know, we can discuss the parameters, and you can proceed to preparing it for the Handbook. While the length of this essay is up to you, it would be preferred that it be no less than four and no more than 20 pages. The style of the essay is also up to you, but it probably should be written as much as possible in a manner that makes it relevant and applicable to tomorrow as well as to today. Since this is going to be an electronic publication, it would also be preferred that it be submitted in electronic format, rather than in hard printed copy, to facilitate editing and placement on the HNSA web site. Any diagrams or pictures submitted as part of your essay should also be submitted in electronic format. Although we can convert from one format to another, it is also preferred that the submission be in some form of Microsoft Word that can be readily edited. We have no objection--indeed, we encourage--inclusion of web site citations as part of your essay. We ask, however, that you double-check their validity just before submitting the essay, as web sites disappear or change addresses with disturbing frequency. While it is certainly acceptable for you to provide your essay on a CD-Rom or 3.5" disk, it would probably be easier for you to send it as an E-mail attachment to me at normtuba@aol.com; your choice on that. If you want to send a CD-Rom or 3.5" disk, please contact me by E-mail for my home address. If you have any problems with any of this, let me know and I will either help you through it or refer your problem to people who are more technically savvy about the computer field than I am. It is also requested that you sign and return one copy of the proffer of gift agreement. I will provide it to you at the time of submission of your essay and, once signed, you keep one copy for your files. A sample is provided for examination below. This is not for the purpose of preventing you from submitting this essay for publication elsewhere or otherwise utilizing it for your own purposes at a later date. Under most circumstances, we would be willing to permit this upon submission of a request by E-mail or in writing. At present, the issue of intellectual property rights is a very complex and murky one, fraught with legal perils. However unlikely it may seem, it is necessary for HNSA to obtain title to your essay to protect the organization from potential future legal problems. Thank you for your interest in writing an essay for us to include as part of the HNSA Operations Manual. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at my E-mail cited above or at (301) 277-3958.
