Cod is a highly restored Gato-class fleet submarine that honors America’s military veterans of all service branches. Largely unmodified for civilian access, the submarine provides extensive access to interior compartments and offers self-guided tours.
During WWII, Cod received seven battle stars and sank more than 12 ships, including the destroyer Karukaya. As a participant in Project 3, Cod carried a Navy cameraman aboard during her last war patrol. The resulting color film footage, available for viewing on YouTube, includes the rescue the 52-man crew of the Dutch submarine O-19, which grounded on Ladd Reef in the South China Sea. When attempts to free the O-19 failed, Cod took the Dutch crew aboard and destroyed O-19 with explosive charges, torpedoes and gunfire. Other film highlights include sinking enemy vessels and the recovery of a lost boarding party that became stranded aboard a junk for two days when Cod was forced to submerge by attacking enemy aircraft.
In 1951, Cod participated in joint U.S. and Canadian naval exercises in the Atlantic and Caribbean where she was credited with sinking an aircraft carrier during LANTFLEX-52. In 1959, she became the Naval Reserve training ship in Cleveland and was in the first group of naval vessels to transit the newly opened St. Lawrence Seaway. In civilian custody since 1976, she was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Today Cod is popular with both visitors and film makers seeking a time machine back to WW II.

USS Cod is a National Historic Landmark.
